Emerald Isle and COVID-19 Pandemic
If anyone lived the adage, "...Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street ...", it was my father, the most optimistic individual I've ever known. Myself, I am more of a productive pessimist. I lean into my anxieties and focus on what I can control, along with a few things, as my wife would attest, not in my control. And, this attitude has guided me while my Town, our state and our nation have been dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic for these last several, challenging months. As I write this, Governor Cooper has extended the Stay at Home Order for North Carolina until May 8 and the Town of Emerald Isle has followed our state’s recommendations for not encouraging guest travel until the ban on non-essential travel is lifted. That being said, on May 9th, parking lots in Emerald Isle will open to the public. Earlier last month, access to the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Sound was given back to Emerald Isle residents and property owners. Permitted activities include swimming, surfing, kiting, kayaking, fishing, and boating. Residents can walk, jog, and sit on the beach strand. All beach goers must adhere to the current social distancing guidelines.
On the real estate front, property manager will be watching closely to see when the state and local mandates will be lifted so vacation rental guests are able to return to our beaches. At the minute, that target date is mid-May. Activities like these reflect Governor Cooper's proposed "soft opening" of the North Carolina economy. Beach Nourishment Phase TWO
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock's hopper dredge, the Ellis Island delivered the last load of sand to West Emerald Isle on April 29th signifying the conclusion of the second of three beach nourishment phases on Bogue Banks and Emerald Isle. So far, the efforts from Phase One (2019) and Phase TWO (2020) have placed in excess of 2 million cubic yards of sand total along the 9.5 miles of project beach in West Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Salter Path, and east and west Emerald Isle. That's roughly the equivalent of 166,700 dump trucks worth of sand, or enough sand to extend the footprint of a regulation NBA basketball court over 2 miles into the sky. The final phase, Phase THREE, which will place sand on the beaches of central Emerald Isle will take place in 2021.
