With the COVID-19 social distancing continuing into May here in North Carolina and the Crystal Coast, this is as good a time as any to discuss how we are to stay fit. I enjoy exercising outside and what follows are several solitary recreational activities that are available here in Emerald Isle, NC and that I enjoy.
Number ONE is walking on the beach. Emerald Isle is fortunate to have wide, wide beaches. So, it is quite easy and enjoyable to stroll on the white sand and look out onto the emerald green ocean or the rainbow colored homes. Beach access is available at all the walkways, every 400 feet. Currently, the public parking lots are closed.
Number TWO is walking on the dedicated Emerald Path. This is a 12 mile path from the Town's border with Indian Beach on the east all the way to The Point at the western end of the island.
Number THREE is walking in any one of several parks. On the island, two favorites are Emerald Wood accessed from Coast Guard Road and the McLean-Spell Park behind the Police station. Off island, you can spend hours in the Croatan Forest in Newport or the Western access in Cedar Point.
Number FOUR is riding a bicycle. I enjoy riding up and down Ocean, Emerald and Sound Drives. And, it is an easy enough ride to explore nearby Indian Beach, Salter Path and Pine Knoll Shores. For the serious cyclists, riding point to point from Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach to the Coast Guard Station at the Point in Emerald Isle is 26 miles.
Of course, you can also ride your bicycle on the beach at low tide and along the dedicated Emerald Path. And, the more adventurous can also ride in one of the several parks that dot the Crystal Coast. Obey the rules of the road, wherever you ride.
Number FIVE is kayaking. On Bogue Banks and everywhere along the Crystal Coast, , there are many pristine waterways, inlets and tidal creeks for your adventures. Our shallow Bogue Sound provides the perfect setting for beginners. Other great areas to kayak are Bear Island and Hammocks Beach Park.
And, while I enjoy these solitary athletic pursuits, like you, I cannot wait for this COVID-19 pandemic to come to an end. But, while the pandemic will end, its impact will be long lasting, maybe life lasting. Certainly, that will be the case in my real estate business.
