IS EMERALD ISLE the RIGHT BEACH TOWN FOR YOU?

PART TWO

This is the second in a series of blogs exploring whether or not Emerald Isle, NC is the right beach town for you. When you have the financial wherewithal to purchase a vacation or second home here in Emerald Isle, NC, you have earned a membership in a fairly exclusive club. Congratulations! Earning that membership has its privileges. And, one of those privileges is the gift of time: as in the time to appreciation good food and beverages, or the time to enjoy recreational activities, and, lastly, the time to improve your community.

So, let’s discover if Emerald Isle, NC is deserving of your time. In a previous blog, I demonstrated that Emerald Isle, NC does have the beverages and good food to satisfy even the most discriminating palate.

In this blog, we examine whether or not Emerald Isle, NC offers sufficient recreational options to work off the calories you just consumed. I'll start with running as I've been a runner most of my adult life. A run on the beach is like nothing else! Crashing waves, salty sea air and coastal breezes surround you as your feet make impressions in the sand. Whether you run on our beautiful beaches, or on the streets in town, or on our local hiking trails, you're sure to find the scenery to be captivating. Your options are limitless when it comes to running on our island; it's really a matter of preference.

For the more competitive runners, the Emerald Isle Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K might be right up your alley. These races happen each April and the Marathon offers a flat and fast course, I doubt if there is more than a 30 foot change in elevation any where on the course, perfect for qualifying for Boston.

More and more, I enjoy walking, especially in winter. Walking through Emerald Isle is also a wonderful way to burn a few calories. Again, your walking options are limitless here. The Emerald Isle Woods and McLean-Spell hiking trails are great places to walk, or, simply step out onto the street and start walking to see where you end up! The next day, choose the opposite direction and have another new adventure. Of course, my favorite walking path is the beach especially if I am watching a glorious sun rise in the morning or a breath taking sun set in the evening.

Cycling is my passion and it is yet another awesome way to burn some calories and experience the natural beauty of Emerald Isle. Chances are good that you will find me riding my recumbent bicycle on Ocean and Emerald Drives. To avoid motorized vehicles, I recommend the Emerald Bikeway. The bikeway is approximately 11 miles of biking bliss. The path winds through grassy areas along Coast Guard Road to Loon Drive, snakes through wooded areas from Loon Drive to the Welcome Center, meanders through the downtown district and passes the Municipal Complex at Black Skimmer Drive and ends at the eastern town limits. There aren't any motorized vehicles allowed on the bikeway, so it's also perfect for running and walking.

The first Saturday in May offers an opportunity to Bike the Banks. Pedal the Crystal Coast and see the sights while you're at it with three rides to choose from! Ride 1 is the Emerald Isle Ride, which is 10 miles along the BikeWay and has a $25 entry fee. Ride 2 is the Fort Macon Ride, which is 50 miles and has a $40 entry fee. Ride 3 is the Cape Lookout Ride, which is 100 miles with a $40 entry fee. Choose your ride and register for Bike the Banks here. Most of the fees go to promote and improve cycling opportunities in Emerald Isle and Bogue Banks.

Whether you love to get out on the water, into the water, or just sit by the water's edge and let the ocean lap at your feet, we have some of our favorite ocean activity. So what's your water pleasure? Fishing, surfing, paddleboarding, sailing, scuba diving, cruising, strolling the shoreline—whatever brings you joy and relaxation coupled with the ebb and flow of the ocean waters—that's what you should do. We have it all here on the North Carolina coast and in Emerald Isle, you have front row access to it all! The fishing is second to none and the diving is world class.

And, then there is golf! My two favorite courses are the Crystal Coast Country Club on Bogue Banks and Star Hill across the bridge in nearby Cape Carteret.

I could go on but, bottom line, if you have the time, Emerald Isle does have a plethora of recreational activities to quench the athletic passion within you.
