How the Crystal Coast Got Its Name

The place I call home, Carteret County, North Carolina goes by a couple of names. To some, we are the SOBX or Southern Outer Banks. And, to many others, we are the Crystal Coast. I prefer the latter moniker and for reasons that hopefully will become clear in this blog.

The Crystal Coast of North Carolina may not be as well known as is the barrier islands to the north. But the barrier islands comprising Core, Shackleford and Bogue Banks boast pristine beaches, a collection of charming towns and scenic island attractions that are a treasure trove of diversity.  Its 85-mile coastline which stretches from Cedar Island to the East, to Cape Lookout National Seashore to the South and Southwest to Cedar Point and the mouth of the White Oak River contains many beloved visitor destinations, as well as residential and vacation home communities. The Crystal Coast of North Carolina has long been enjoyed by visitors, but what gives it such a glistening name? Perhaps more than you know.

The most defining and most glistening landmark in the area is Cape Lookout Lighthouse – known locally as the “Diamond Lady” based on its black and white daymark. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only such structure in the United States to bear this daymark, intended not only for differentiation between similar light towers, but also to show direction. The center of the black diamonds points in a north-south direction, while the center of the white diamonds points east-west. Standing regally at the southern tip of Cape Lookout National Seashore, the views from its pristine beaches are only rivaled by the view, as I can attest, from the top, which can be enjoyed on scheduled, guided tours by National Park Service rangers at select times of the year.

The emerald waters along Bogue Banks add even more "bling" to the area with the warm Gulf Stream bringing a tropical vibe to this uniquely southern facing beach. Whether you’re fishing, surfing, paddling or just laying on the sand, crystals seem to shimmer across the ocean as the sunshine lights your day.

Then there is, of course, the Town of Emerald Isle. When the original developers were contemplating the purchase of this undeveloped half of Bogue Banks in the 1950's, a consultant from Florida was hired to advise them. This consultant asked to be flown over the property to gain a perspective on how development might occur. With no development at the time and appearing from the air as a solid green gem in the middle of a sea of sparkling water, he looked down from the heavens and said, "This Place Shall be Known as Emerald Isle".

Finally, as is true for all great destinations, the people, businesses and events held at various locations along the Crystal Coast are the facets that really bring it to life. With lodging for every lifestyle and budget, diverse dining driven by a sustainable seafood movement and award-winning events throughout the year, you’re sure to find your place at the Crystal Coast.

So, its not too surprising that an area where words like 'glistening,' 'shimmer,' 'sparkling,' and 'emerald' are used to describe extremely clear waters and miles of inviting, white beaches would be called the Crystal Coast.
