IS EMERALD ISLE the RIGHT BEACH TOWN FOR YOU?

PART ONE

This next series of blogs is all about whether or not Emerald Isle, NC is the right beach town for you. When you have the financial wherewithal to purchase a vacation or second home here in Emerald Isle, NC, you have earned a membership in a fairly exclusive club. Congratulations! Earning that membership has its privileges. And, one of those privileges is the gift of time: as in the time to appreciation good food and beverages, or the time to enjoy recreational activities, and, lastly, the time to improve your community.

So, let’s discover if Emerald Isle, NC is deserving of your time.

If you have the time, does Emerald Isle, NC have the beverages and good food to satisfy your discriminating palate? We will answer that question In this blog. There is a lot to unpack in answering that question. For starters I am a professional real estate agent but I am not a professional food critic. However, I’ve had the distinct privilege to enjoy food and drink the world over. And, without question, the finest meals with the most consistent quality and variety that I ever experienced were found on an island, the island of Singapore. Every cuisine in the world, from Arabian to Vietnamese, is represented in Singapore and many restaurants have been reviewed by the NY Times and other esteemed publications.

If you have the palate of a Gordon Ramsey, move to Singapore. For the rest of us, I would argue, Emerald Isle is quite a reasonable facsimile especially when you consider that Singapore is halfway around the world, uncommonly crowded and unbelievably expensive.

Here, in Emerald Isle, or wherever I am, my preferred adult beverage is a martini. People think martinis are simple. How wrong can they be? To be sure, the base is gin and vermouth, leaving aside the vodka question for the moment. But gin has all these things in it, and vermouth has all these things in it, and if you throw in the bitters, you’re dealing with even more. The balance of all these botanicals is kind of magical. Kathryn’s Martini Bar and Bistro here in Emerald Isle absolutely nails the base, the spirit to vermouth ratio, and the garnish game. And, my martini is always served very cold and properly diluted. Time well rewarded, if you want my opinion.

If your preference for adult beverages tends toward craft beer, I have two excellent recommendations: The Growler in Emerald Isle and Shortway Brewery in nearby Newport. And, if wine is your pleasure, the Emerald Isle Wine Market should satisfy your sophisticated palate.

Moving on to food, Kathryn’s has been serving discriminating visitors and locals expertly crafted cuisine featuring local seafood and certified Angus beef for well over a decade. In addition to its classic take on shrimp and grits, the locally sourced grouper and the soft shell crabs, my favorite, Kathryn’s is equally adept at marrying filet mignon with a variety of seafood sides. The only way to improve on the beverages and food at Kathryn’s is to insist on having Michael as your server.

Another destination for an exceptional steak, locally sourced seafood or a signature cocktail is Caribsea. This establishment is noted for its 4th floor deck with views of the ocean and sound. Watching the sunset as you sip a craft cocktail is something I never tire of. Neither will you. Mosey back downstairs and experience pan-seared scallops, tuna tartare, a bone-in ribeye, or my favorite, the duck breast with grape compote.

Bottom line, if you have the time, Emerald Isle does have the sophisticated beverage and food establishments to satisfy your discriminating palate.
