Outdoor Activies for your Fall Getaway to Emerald Isle, NC

With the fall season in full swing, the island fun is still going strong. There’s no shortage of attractions along North Carolina’s Crystal coast and the fall season is an ideal time to experience them in Emerald Isle. From dropping your line in the water to exploring tucked-away nature trails, you and your family are sure to find a wide variety of coastal adventures while on your island getaway this Fall. The most popular time of the year for fishing is during the Fall months. The water temperature is starting to cool down and the days are pleasant. You can fish in the surf, off a pier, or on one of the popular charters. You don’t have to be a skilled angler to find remarkable fishing along our coastline. Our sound, surf, and piers offer every fisherman or woman an opportunity to reel in a prize fish! To get an incredible view of our coastline while waiting for the fish to bite – these rare wooden fishing piers are the place to be. The Bogue Inlet Pier in the heart of Emerald Isle as well as the Oceana Pier in Atlantic Beach offer unique fishing experiences. To fish from our 1000 foot piers you don’t even need a fishing license or even a fishing pole! These one-stop fishing spots have rods available for rent and bait waiting for your big catch.

Larger fish such as Spanish and King Mackerel can be caught from the pier during September, and as we move through October, Bluefish, Black Drum and the famous Spots are present and plentiful. November brings Speckled Trout and Puppy Drum to both the surf and pier. Bottom fishing offers a variety of fish throughout the Fall season including Black Drum, Bluefish, Pufferfish, Pompano, and Sea Mullet. Shrimp bait for bottom fishing seems to be the most popular bait. The beaches are a hot spot for anyone looking to do some surf fishing and surf fishermen can expect to catch Red Drum, Flounder, Pompano, Sea Mullet, and Bluefish. Live bait is best for catching Red Drum and Flounder. Shrimp and Sand Fleas are fantastic for Pompano and Mullet. Bogue Sound is the perfect spot to cast from a kayak.

Stroll down some of the best birding trails There are few places left on earth as pure as some of the birding spots you will find while staying in Emerald Isle. This stretch of coastline remains a sanctuary for coastal wildlife, and you can find some of the best birding trails here and throughout the surrounding beach communities along the Crystal COast. Be sure to plan a stroll down the peaceful trails that wind through the maritime forest at Emerald Isle Woods Park. Here, you’ll have the chance to do some birdwatching, as well as spot a variety of other wildlife, in addition to just soaking up the beautiful natural surroundings. The trails here are woodsy and provide you with a one-mile loop perfect for hikers of all ages.

Cedar Point Tideland Trail is a great site for the whole family located off Highway 58 on the mainland in Cedar Point. The trails are flat, with many boardwalks and easy to traverse. There are lots of interpretive signs about wildlife and the ecosystems at the site. This site has gorgeous views of maritime forest, tidal flats, and open water. The trail winds through areas with very beachy vibes, and then turns into a more heavily wooded area as well. We saw thousands of fiddler crabs, and lots of Osprey, various herons and egrets, gulls, and songbirds. There were cool gnarly live oak and cedar trees lining much of the trail. This site has two loop trails: a .6 mile loop and a 1.3 mile loop. Make sure to remember the sunscreen and bug spray, since this site has both full sun areas and heavily wooded areas.

Pine Knoll Shores is home to a natural spot filled with adventure, the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area. This 265-acre nature preserve provides you with two trails to explore, The Roosevelt and Alice Hoffman Nature Trails. The Roosevelt Trail is a 1.25-mile-long path that is the more challenging of the two and is perfect for anyone who loves taking the well-traveled path through a high dune ridge and winding around the marshes. If you need to get some rest from your outdoor excursion, there are plenty of benches along the trail. There are also wildlife viewing areas stationed along the trail route, perfect for enjoying the breathtaking views and the hundreds of birds that call these marshes home each year.

Fun fall festivals the whole family will love. Embracing autumn can be done in several ways, but there’s nothing like the fall festivals on the Crystal Coast. Towards the end of October, you and your family will be able to marvel over the Carolina Kite Festival. The annual event features more than 100 vibrant kites floating in the sky. Bring your own or watch the others during this free Crystal Coast tradition. You can also look forward to The North Carolina Seafood Festival in October! This free event is celebrating more than 25 years of being a family favorite. It’s a famous festival that provides visitors and locals with endless entertainment, many fun activities and some of the best seafood you’ll ever taste. The Swansboro Mullet Festival, also in October, offers a glimpse into history that is combined with a celebration of all things mullet. This family-friendly festival kicks off on Saturday in downtown Swansboro with a parade down Highway 24. Enjoy the sounds of beach music and live bands coming from the Harry C. Pugliese Pavilion. And the kiddos will love the children’s area that includes games, a climbing wall, inflatables and the always popular “Mullet Toss!”

You don’t have to venture off the island to enjoy a great game of golf, thanks to the local Country Club of Crystal Coast. Located in the center of the island in the small town of Pine Knoll Shores, the club offers an 18-hole Championship course which hugs the Bogue Sound borders and which features magnificent views and serene native landscapes. The course comprises lush fairways with 419 Bermuda Greens, water hazards on 13 holes, native Heather Grasses, and views of the Bogue Sound on 6 holes, ensuring a challenging but beautiful environment throughout. In addition to the golf course, the Country Club of Crystal Coast also features a putting green and short game practice area, a club swimming pool, tennis courts, and a club house that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and which can host a wide range of events, from corporate meetings to romantic soundfront weddings. From a breezy game of golf to a full season of family fun, the Country Club of Crystal Coast is an engaging way to enjoy the NC golfing scene this Fall without ever leaving Bogue Banks!
