People have been discussing how the reopening of Emerald Isle, Carteret County, North Carolina and our economy will proceed. And when it will begin.
Here in North Carolina, Governor Cooper has extended the Stay at Home proclamation into early May. And he described reopening our economy as operating a dimmer switch and not a flip switch.
In Carteret County and Emerald Isle, local government agencies are following the lead of our Governor. And, in following the lead of our Governor, the Mayor of Emerald Isle has reopened access to the Atlantic Ocean, recently. And vacation rental companies are doing deep cleanings of properties with the expectation of having the first vacationers arrive around end of May.
My feeling is that we will be dealing with COVID-19 for a long time. However, if it is like other viruses, its impact will diminish in summer. That diminution, however, is tempered by the global nature of the disease. And, it does not seem likely we will have a vaccination against this virus any time soon. We are not even certain immunizations will work.
So, what to do? I harken back to the polio epidemic in the 1950's. The disease increased every summer. We didn't shut down the economy. We didn't practice social distancing. But, we took measures, like not have children congregate in large groups, especially at public pools.
And, with that backdrop, I would suggest some risk assessment. What are the probabilities of contracting the virus? Do we have measures in place that can decrease that probability? If so what are they?
Answers to these questions remain to be forthcoming. But, I can envision us wearing masks whenever we venture out and I can see small groups, e.g. families gathering. And,
I can see sanitizing solutions on every person. It may be a tad awkward but it may be what we must do to reopen America.
